Do you want to write a picture book?  Or illustrate your own story?  Here’s a course that will let you maximize your talents for visualizing what you want on each page, whether you write, illustrate or like to do both.  With an editor who’ll help focus and polish your narrative and an author-illustrator who’ll show how to maximize its visual potential, you’ll learn to appeal to your audience—children and publishing decision makers. You’ll craft a story that offers abundant illustration possibilities. Art demonstrations and class exercises will help you feel comfortable putting your character(s) into the story environment. Discussion of the classics and today’s popular titles will help you see the context in which your work will be considered. You’ll become familiar with different illustration styles and see the visual elements that have the most impact. Understanding how text and art combine is vital to the creation of a successful picture book. Whether you are an author, illustrator, or both, instruction and individual guidance will help you reach your goals.

    WHAT MAKES THIS CLASS SPECIAL?

Writing and illustrating call on different skill sets. Artist Steve Henry and editorial director Barbara Lalicki will teach collaboratively, giving students experienced guidance and support in both vital areas—and the view from both sides of the desk.

Steve says, “I think of myself as an illustrator first. Having worked with fine editors on picture books, I’ve learned that the words and images must merge seamlessly.
