Is rejection getting you down? In the writing life, it can often feel like submissions only ever end in rejection. In this one-day intensive class that combines generative writing with practical tips for submitting, we will help you free yourself from the sting of rejection in order to get pieces accepted and unleash your creative voice. We will explore how rejection can infiltrate the writing, revising, submitting, and application processes. We will also look at ways to dial down the internal editor during the writing process.

This boot camp is divided into two parts: in the morning, we will focus on identifying our fears, naming our dreams, and generative writing in which we can all collectively put aside fears of rejection and be as bold and courageous as we want in drafting the pieces and pitches we have always wanted to write. There will also be brainstorming about ideas for homes for the pieces we have started when they are finished.

In the afternoon, we will help participants to develop their own personalized submission management and organization system to “collect rejections,” creating tiers of submissions to take the sting of the submission process. We will also do a full group supportive workshop of any pitches or beginnings of pieces generated in the morning, focusing on encouraging the creative voice, bringing out the full potential of the intention of the writer, and developing a practical “action plan” for the piece as it moves towards completion.

Participants will leave with a personal submission management system, new writing generated towards a pitch or new piece, and an action plan for submitting new pieces and continuing to produce adventurous writing!

Kim Liao's writing has appeared in Catapult, Lit Hub, The Rumpus, Salon, The Millions, River Teeth, Vol. 1 Brooklyn, Another Chicago Magazine, Fringe, Brevity's Nonfiction Blog, Fourth River, and others. Her essay published by Lit Hub in 2016 about collecting 100 rejections a year caused a stir in the literary community and led to invitations to guest lecture as a "Rejection Expert," a title she wears with a healthy dose of irony. She is currently revising her first novel and a family memoir about the Taiwanese Independence Movement.
