    Instructor: Jaclyn Van Lieu Vorenkamp
    Length: 5 sessions, $450
    Thursdays, 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

In this five session course, we will discuss the meaning and purpose of the short story and how it differs from longer forms. Through the exploration of economy, narrative arc, anecdote, dialogue, characterization, and point of view, students will learn how to use the varied forms of the short story--the short, the short short, flash, sudden or something even more condensed--by learning the rules and how to break them. We will read from authors such as Chris Meeker, David Foster Wallace, Tobias Wolff, John Jeremiah Sullivan, Grace Paley, Robert Coover, Lydia Davis, Norman Rush, and George Saunders, among others, and then with prompts for exercises and class discussion of the students’ own work, we will analyze the ways in which the students’ use of craft elements has shaped the structure, tone, pacing, atmosphere, and meaning of their story.
