In these unfunny times, can you keep your sense of humor? Here's a better question: What's the alternative? Geared toward the writer who "thinks funny," this humor workshop will help you connect--or reconnect--with your comic voice. We'll continue writing the first-person stories covered in prior classes, but this time we'll branch out into satire, news-based humor, and even comic fiction. Nora Ephron, David Sedaris, Calvin Trillin, and Tina Fey are among the laugh-out loud humorists we’ll discuss, emphasizing comic timing, character arc, word choice, and the line between “person” and “persona.” Since a story is only as amusing as the way it’s told, we’ll also do some prompts designed to shake off preconceived notions of “serious” prose, and help you find the funny in the characters, dialogue, and situations you create. Previous students have had their assignments published in print and online. Whether your goal is to write a Shouts and Murmurs piece for The New Yorker, a funny two-minute radio commentary, or begin a book-length humor collection, the first step is the same: keep your wits about you.

Dan Zevin is a Thurber Prize-winning humorist. His latest book and YouTube series is Very Modern Mantras: Daily Affirmations for Daily Aggravations. He’s also the author of Dan Gets a Minivan and The Day I Turned Uncool, which were both optioned by Adam Sandler. Dan has been an award-winning humor columnist for the New York Times, a comic commentator for NPR, and a contributor to print or digital editions of The New Yorker, McSweeney’s, Rolling Stone, Salon, Real Simple, Parents, and The Wall Street Journal. He's taught in Sarah Lawrence's MFA program, and at NYU, Emerson, and Fordham.
