Jumpstart Your Poetry Practice: How Poems Are Made with Elaine Sexton (March to April)

Everyone benefits by revisiting the basics, by reading the most striking new poems and the poems that informed them. We learn from trying out the scaffoldings great poems are built on. In this workshop we will take a fresh look at how poems are made, devices that are new, and others made fresh under informed review. In-class lessons and at-home writing exercises will be followed by constructive critiques aimed at building on the best lines in your drafts. You will leave this five-week workshop with the start of five new poems and at least as many practical strategies to use going forward. Weekly handouts include poems, prompts, and essays by poets on poetry prepared for you to read and try out between classes. If you are looking for guidance, encouragement, and community, this workshop offers these essential things. No matter how many poems we have written or published –– when we sit down to write a new poem we are starting from scratch, each time better informed. Beginners are welcome! [Note: Enrollment in the earlier five-week workshop is not required for this class.]

Elaine Sexton’s third collection of poetry is Prospect/Refuge (Sheep Meadow Press). A long-time member of the faculty at the Writing Institute, she has also taught workshops & seminars in poetry, the chapbook, bookmaking, and text & image at various writing and art programs in the U.S. and abroad, including New York University, City College, Poets House, and Arts Workshop International.
