As writers, we have the power and freedom to manipulate structure and time in our stories. In this class, we will explore narrative constructions and how to effectively handle time shifts in our writing. Each week we will discuss and analyze the craft techniques utilized in a published short story or essay and read and critique student work. In-class writing prompts may also be assigned to help students hone their writing skills.

The goal of this course is to consider why and how authors conceptualize literary structures and, in doing so, find the confidence to take risks in our own writing. We will read work by Virginia Woolf, Donald Barthelme, Roxane Gay, and Ernest Hemingway, among others. Writers of all levels are welcome.

Victoria Provazza received her MFA from Sarah Lawrence College, where she served as Managing Editor of LUMINA, the graduate program's literary journal. She now teaches Writing and Literature at Fordham University and Sacred Heart University. Her work has appeared in Fiction Southeast, Story|Houston and Driftwood Press, among others.
