Whether one is writing fiction or nonfiction, authentic dialogue and character development are essential. In this class, we will delve into what creates a credible, visceral character – through actions, words, personality style, quirks and responses. A developed character and convincing dialogue are critical components in driving any type of writing forward – be it a novel, essay or memoir. Students are invited to write fiction or nonfiction for this class. We will workshop on a weekly basis, sharing our thoughts about each other’s work. In addition, we will read famous writers, studying their dialogue and character development. Susan Shapiro Barash has written thirteen nonfiction books and a novel (pen name Susannah Marren). Barash teaches in the Writing Department at Marymount Manhattan College, blogs for the Huffington Post and Psychology Today, has served as a literary panelist for the New York State Council on the Arts and as a judge for the International Emmys. She earned her BA at Sarah Lawrence College and her masters in English and Creative Writing at NYU.
