This class will open each week with a short discussion of all things poetic in which students can share their writing accomplishments as well as their frustrations. They can offer each other recommendations and support. Free writes and exercises will be given by the instructor as they become relevant to the students’ needs. Through slow, and close reading, craft elements such as the poetic line, description, point of view, forms, and so on will be portrayed in poems by the great modernists as well as contemporary writers. The bulk of our time together will function as a poetry workshop in which each student will have the opportunity to share a poem and receive thoughtful feedback from the instructor as well as fellow students. Optional writing triggers and reading assignments will be recommended. There will be two short breaks each class.

Carla Carlson is the author of Love and Oranges, a chapbook, and many of her poems have been published in journals and magazines in the New York area. She received her MFA in poetry at Sarah Lawrence College in 2014, where she currently teaches poetry classes, as a member of the faculty of Writing Institute. She lives in Bronxville, NY with her husband.

Registration is no longer available because the registration deadline has passed.
