    Course Description
In any story, character drives plot, and writing becomes a process of discovery. As an actor asks a director, 'What's my motivation?', so does a writer need to uncover what their characters want, and what they're willing to do to get it. Too often in fiction we see flat or one dimensional characters. In this workshop, we will focus on the process of bringing our characters to life.

Each week we'll read student work and discuss how to strengthen our stories through character. We'll ask 'What does this character want?', 'What is at stake?', and 'Is this the right time at which to tell the story?'

Along with critiquing manuscripts, there will be assigned readings and writing prompts designed to hone your writing skills. By the end of our session you will walk away with a sense of how to take a back seat and allow your characters to take the wheel; they may surprise you!
