What do the creators of Seinfeld and Brandon Stanton, photographer and author of the popular photojournalistic series, Humans of New York, have in common?

They’re artists and writers whose projects celebrate the notion that there is powerful material in the tiny, ordinary events in life.  In this Beginning Memoir class, we will mine our memories—the recent and not-so-recent (that’s your choice), and locate some of those tiny ordinary experiences that have nestled in and remain part of our personal histories.

We will write from prompts designed to shake up the recollections and ignite strong story ideas.  There will be opportunities to share your work in class and also learn the art, value and skill of offering feedback and constructive critique to fellow writers.

The goal will be to craft and polish several short pieces of memoir-glimpses into one’s world using stories of small, everyday moments to frame the narrative.

Kathy Curto teaches at The Writing Institute/Sarah Lawrence College, Montclair State University (MSU) and across the metropolitan area engaging writers of all ages.  She was recently chosen to serve as one of the 2016-17 Mentors in the MSU Engaged Teaching Fellows Program.  Her work has been published in the anthology, Listen to Your Mother:  What She Said Then, What We’re Saying Now, and in publications including The New York Times, Barrelhouse, La Voce di New York, Drift, Talking Writing, Junk, The Inquisitive Eater, The Asbury Park Press, Italian Americana, VIA-Voices in Italian Americana and Lumina. In 2006 she was awarded the Kathryn Gurfein Writing Fellowship at SLC and served as a 2015-16 MSU Engaged Teaching Fellow, as well.
